Creating a Course on the Use of Music in Behavioral Health

Creating a continuing education course on the use of music in behavioral health requires planning and a willingness to engage in a thoughtful, iterative process. In the following video, I provide an overview of the course, including the purpose of the course and the structure of the course. Criterion-Based Assessments

  • Module 2 Assessment – How Music Impacts Us
    • This assessment addresses the following objectives:
      • Objective 1.1: After completing this training, learners will have foundational knowledge of the neurobiological and psychosocial mechanisms of music that will allow them to explain how music impacts people.
      • Objective 1.2: After completing this training, learners will be able to identify and assess situations where music may have negative, activating, or harmful effects in behavioral health treatment, while also reflecting on the ethical implications of these impacts on patient well-being.
      • Objective 1.3: After completing this training, learners will be able to identify how they are impacted by music, such as in the areas of mood, attention, motivation, when they listen to it or actively make it.
  • Module 3 Assessment – Music Therapy Case Studies
    • This assessment addresses the following objectives:
      • Objective 1.1: After completing this training, learners will have foundational knowledge of the neurobiological and psychosocial mechanisms of music that will allow them to explain how music impacts people.
      • Objective 1.2: After completing this training, learners will be able to identify and assess situations where music may have negative, activating, or harmful effects in behavioral health treatment, while also reflecting on the ethical implications of these impacts on patient well-being.
      • Objective 2.2: After completing this course, learners will be able to recognize situations in which their clients may benefit from specialized care that requires consultation with or referral to a qualified music therapist.
  • Module 4 and 5 Assessment – Ways to Use Music in Your Work and When to Consult or Refer to a Music Therapist
    • This assessment addresses the following objectives:
      • Objective 1.1: After completing this training, learners will have foundational knowledge of the neurobiological and psychosocial mechanisms of music that will allow them to explain how music impacts people.
      • Objective 2.1: After completing this training, learners will be able to examine and apply various methods of incorporating music into their therapeutic work with clients.
      • Objective 2.2: After completing this course, learners will be able to recognize situations in which their clients may benefit from specialized care that requires consultation with or referral to a qualified music therapist.
      • Objective 2.3: After completing this course, learners will be able to recall questions they can ask about a client’s musical preferences, practices, and history that can inform how they incorporate music into their therapeutic work with clients.
  • Final Assessment
    • This assessment draws from questions related to all five modules and addresses all six learner objectives.
