Have you thought about working in the field of addiction treatment and live in Colorado, but feel unsure where to begin? Three trainings are core to becoming a Certified Addiction Technician, Certified Addiction Specialist, or Licensed Addiction Counselor in Colorado. They are:

  • Addiction Counseling Skills (21 hours/3 days)
    • This training provides foundational skills for providing counseling support to individuals with substance misuse and addiction. In this training, you’ll learn how to provide client-centered, counselor-directed therapy with a motivational approach.
  • Case Conceptualization and Documentation (14 hours/2 days)
    • This training goes over how to conceptualize a clinical case and the legal importance of documentation. In this training, you’ll learn about documentation requirements for screening, assessment, ASAM criteria, service planning, integrated treatment delivery, progress notes, and discharge planning. How to maintain confidentiality of the client record, including releases of information, mandatory disclosure, and informed consent, will also be discussed.
  • Principles of Addiction (21 hours/3 days)
    • This training introduces models of addiction, defines addiction treatment, presents the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) principles of effective treatment, outlines various types of addiction treatment and the use of evidence-based treatment approaches. In this training, you will learn about the competencies required to be an addiction counselor in Colorado, gaining an awareness of the challenges and trends in the field of addiction treatment.

I have completed the Training of Trainers of Core Curriculum through the Colorado Behavioral Health Administration, and will be offering these core trainings online both live and in a hybrid format. In the live format, we will engage with the material and discussion together over the course of 2 or 3 days, depending on the class. To receive credit for trainings offered live, you must attend the entire training. With the hybrid format, the informational material will be available asynchronously, and discussions about it will be held live online at a scheduled time. To receive credit for the hybrid format, you must complete all assignments and quizzes related to the asynchronous material and attend all scheduled discussions.
